Lime
Rendering:
Lime mortar allows stone walls to breathe, so any moisture
which is absorbed is able to evaporate away. As temperatures
change, the lime mortar allows the building to expand
and contract without cracking. This is achieved in modern
buildings using expansion joints. |
|
Pointing:
When lime built masonry walls are pointed with cement
based mortar, which is less permeable than brick or stone,
moisture ends up trying to escape through the face of
the brick or stone as opposed to through the joint. This
is particularly bad in freezing conditions and results
in erosion of the surface face. |
